If you’re playing in church a bunch, you’ve likely encountered “the worship toms!” This simple, yet illusive groove pattern is in SO MANY modern worship songs, so you’ve gotta know it. If your tom grooves feel forced, sloppy, and not-natural, though, then today’s lesson is for you! There’s likely just one simple and fixable issue going on with your “worship tom groove” - Here’s what it might be...

    omg! Are you playing with bare WOODEN-tip sticks, not nylon/plastic tip? Why, why would any Drummer do that? If I asked 6 drummers and they all told me they love wooden tip, I'd think they've all lost it. Wooden tip is duller, less Pingy, "warmer" but too soft. You want a nice bright, clear PING (maybe w/ a lil' wash, without rivets), for JAZZ, for hard rock, for Country, for Blues and for 50s-60s Oldies. Darn-near everything! Go ahead, gimme any argument at all against a good clear Ping. (you can PLAY a Pingy cymbal softly, too, if you think it too piercing). And just because (insert any famous drummer) uses wooden tip, thats a bad reason. I dont buy Nike shoes just cuz Michael Jordan mifght've worn them.

    Well, about the beater i have to say that even with a muffled kick the sound itself changes quite a bit when you release. I was using it to underline a bass stroke while playing reggae and make it boom

    Good video with clear explanation. I tuned my snare with a sponge between the snare holder and the snares of the snaredrum. Sounds exellent without ringing for studio recordings.

    I agree with this. that's exactly why I practice on my E-SET the way I do. #1 Never use headphones. Always a live amp. I just turn it down so I can evenly hear both natural strikes and the sound of the amp both. seems to work well for me. Plus I am using the VAD504 so that helps LOL

    I've found the best way to get a comfortable setup is to make sure I can hit every piece of the kit using brushes with traditional grip, which shortens my reach by probably about 2 inches compared to my typical matched grip with sticks. I've ended up sitting a little higher and closer than I used to, and also tilting the snare drum ever so slightly away from me. I also put the ride more or less where the second rack tom usually goes. Also the left side of my kit got higher, and the right side of my kit got lower. I think I'd end up with a stair-step pattern, similar to what Neil Peart and Dave Weckl arrived at in their later careers if I were to add more drums and cymbals. I have less shoulder, back, and knee pain setting up this way.

    This is something that I’ve been struggling with for years. I’ve never had anyone explain the how or why about these patterns that have left me confused and frustrated. To me, these parts are too “busy” for the song and I just don’t get it. I’ve even been asked by leaders to play a straight groove at times. In a word, thanks. Hopefully this will help me.

    I think the next step to learn after mastering what is in this video is learning to play the same hand pattern but switching to 1/8 notes on the kick. For example: the bridge of “good and gracious king”. The bridge of “what a wonderful name it is” and the Tom part in “another in the fire” have vastly improved my coordination and freedom when I finally learned them.

    This is basically what I use as a warmup every time I sit down on the kit. First I do hands, orchestrating it around the kit, then feet (double bass). I start at 60 bpm and work my way up to 100 (110 on a good day). I've noticed great improvement in my timing since I started religiously using this as a warmup.

    Hey man you got good videos that I enjoy them. I have a strange about an odd issue on the bass drum and doing doubles and triples all together I have been planning for quite a while and I've been able to do them really fast basically doing a ankle like technique with a slight slide maybe.

    • @Shurmstick
      @Shurmstick 4 дні тому

      Show this thing cut me off as I was typing. Have been able to play good fast doubles for many years and then decided to try to do the heel toe method. It was taken too slow and then all of a sudden realized I couldn't play either one not even the way I used to play. And I can't figure out why. Do you have any suggestions or an idea. That's why I couldn't do what I've been doing forever now after trying to heal to toe

    • @Shurmstick
      @Shurmstick 4 дні тому

      Also I want to add that I played hard heavy Rock and hardcore for a long time so speed has never been a problem for me or power on the bass drum. Because I kind of just have always used this ankle technique that I got a long time ago. I am 60 years old now and it was still working great until I decided to try something else so now I'm stuck I can't use what I used to use and I can't use the heel toe
